HURFORD SEMANTICS A COURSEBOOK PDF

Vudonris TIF 3 Conjunctions like English and or German und, or French et have yet a further kind of meaning from both proper names and courswbook nouns, and prepositions. This is a decent introductory guide to semantics. Practice Do the following words refer to things in the world? In aiming to discover some system and pattern in an assortment of particular facts about the meanings of individual words, sentences, and utterances, it is obviously necessary to try to move from particular facts, such as those mentioned above, to generalizations, i. Notice that one can often use different linking prepositions with no change of meaning, e. Other instances of the verb be, as we have seen, are simply a grammatical device for linking a predicate that is not a verb i.

As a non-native speaker of English and a beginner in learning semantics, I have much enjoyed the book and the topic though it did take me some time to finish- even more time than necessary- partly because I followed the instructions of answering the tasks used for presentation and of working out the exercises on each chapter in notebook for that purpose till the half of the book when I felt confident of absorbing the points explained and being able to follow the argument.

I recommend it to every one even to the advanced because it helps focus on and distinguishes the ideas of reference, sense and meaning. Also, it discusses speech acts, illocutions and implicature which are indispensable concepts for pragmatics and discourse analysis.

As an English teacher and a long-time student of several foreign languages, I have a fairly broad background in general linguistics. At the beginning of each chapter is a pre-test which helps you to be certain you have mastered the items taught in the previous chapter.

That pretest is a great tool for checking your progress and ensuring that you understand the concepts being presented. The book teaches you the technical terms you need to know, but the language of the book itself is well suited even to complete laymen. I have cursorily examined a few of these, and they seem like very logical next steps.

Every practice before a definition or a comment decreases the abstractness of the information. I really enjoyed studying it this semester.
