This foundational theorem establishes the theory of support varieties as a powerful and elegant link between group cohomology and group representations, via algebraic geometry. This new point of view will require us to explore in some depth other topics - important on their own - such as derived categories, dg-algebras and dg-modules, and complete intersection rings. The school will be accessible to graduate students and postdocs. Each participant is expected to contribute a talk, or to help in preparing a talk depending on the number of participants , and most of the preparation should be done before the beginning of the school.

The subject is viewed from the perspective of homological algebra and the theory of representations of finite dimensional algebras; the author emphasizes modular representations and the homological algebra associated with their categories. This volume concentrates on the cohomology of groups, always with representations in view. Benson also gives an overview of the algebraic topology and K-theory associated with the cohomology of groups and discusses algebraic and topological proofs of the finite generation of the cohomology ring of a finite group.
The book culminates in a chapter dealing with the theory of varieties for modules. Much of the material presented here has never appeared before in book form. Consequently students and research workers studying group theory, and indeed algebra, will appreciate this exposition on the essential results of modern representation theory. I can recommend this book highly to anyone who works with representation theory and cohomology of finite groups.
Roggenkamp, Mathematical Reviews Synopsis An introduction to modern developments in the representation theory of finite groups and associative algebras. Synopsis This volume is a self-contained introduction to the ideas needed to understand modern developments in the representation theory of finite groups and associative algebras.
Synopsis This is the first of two volumes which will provide an introduction to modern developments in the representation theory of finite groups and associative algebras. The subject is viewed from the perspective of homological algebra and the theory of representations of finite dimensional algebras.
The volume is self-contained and independent of its successor, being primarily concerned with the exposition of the necessary background material.
The heart of the book is a lengthy introduction to the Auslander-Reiten representation theory of finite dimensional algebra. Consequently students and research workers studying group theory and indeed algebra in general will be grateful to Dr Benson for supplying an exposition of a good deal of the essential results of modern representation theory.
